Zandile Gumede is a member of the African National Congress and the current Chair Person of the African National Congress (ANC) at EThekwini Region. Zandile Gumede, a mother of four and grandmother of seven, lives in Phoenix and was born in Amaoti, near Inanda, north of Durban.

She is one of 13 children born to the Majoras. Zandile Gumede attended Amaoti Elementary School, Ohojini Elementary School in Hammersdale, JL Dube Middle School and Zweribanj Middle School. Her father was a police officer.

Her professional career includes former community councilor, executive committee member, and community and emergency services committee chair. Zandile Gumede was elected for two terms as a member of the Proportional Representation (PR) before becoming a member of the Amaoti City Council. From 2007 until 2015 she was also elected treasurer of eThekwini Municipality.

Since 1994, Zandile Gumede has worked with various community development organizations in Inanda, including the Inanda Civil Society, Inanda Development Forum, CPF and Health Organizations. Their purchase of armored vehicles has caused concern among some critics.

After the ruling ANC appointed Muxorishi Kaunda as the new mayor of Durban in August 2019, he pleaded with Zandile Gumede to resign as mayor. On 26 August 2019, it was reported that the ANC had accepted Gumede’s resignation, but she withdrew her resignation two days later. Her lawyers advised her to withdraw her resignation in view of the criminal charges filed against her.

On 19 August 2020, Zandile Gumede was sworn in as Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Assembly, succeeding Ricardo Mutembu, who died of COVID-19 in July. The opposition criticized her appointment, but former President Jacob Zuma’s son Duduzaneh Zuma congratulated her.

In December 2018, the South African Criminal Investigation Service implicated Zandile Gumede in a forensic investigation into fraud, money laundering and corruption during her tenure, as well as illegal bidding, bogus job sourcing and various other issues involving individuals. She was also involved in suspicions of Sxual involvement.

On 14 May 2019, Zandile Gumede appeared before the Special Economic Crimes Court in Durban on multiple fraud charges and was released on R50,000 bail pending further court hearings. The ANC Youth League called for Gumede’s resignation as mayor because court-imposed bail conditions precluded her from doing so.

On the other hand, the ANC Women’s Federation supported her continuation. After Zandile Gumede’s arrest, the Hawks investigator in charge of the case was ambushed by three gunmen, but fortunately survived despite his injuries. Her term as mayor ended when Muxorishi Kaunda was elected Mayor of Durban on 5 September 2019.

On 10 October 2019, Hawks and members of the South African National Prosecutor’s Office (NPA) Property Forfeiture Unit stormed Zandile Gumede’s home on Ilchester Avenue in Durban North. However, she was not found there and was found to have rented and vacated the property in July and had only recently changed her address in direct violation of her bail conditions.

Hawks and the NPA then noticed that she has moved to her home in Inanda, and gave her a court order to conduct a raid related to R280 million bid fraud at the Durban Waste Authority. The purpose of the raid was to seize R51 million in assets, including luxury cars such as Porsches, Lamborghinis and Jaguars. Various homes of 15 other co-defendants were also raided during the raid. Footage of the attack quickly went viral on the Internet.

On 30 November 2021, Zandile Gumede, along with 21 other individuals, is scheduled to appear at the Durban High Court for a pre-trial conference. The trial will cover charges of corruption, fraud and racketeering in relation to business tenders in the eThekwini Municipality. As of 29 March 2024, the case against Gumede and her co-accused continued, as they face more than 2000 charges.
