Ertz declared on January 8, 2013, that he would forgo his senior year and enter the 2013 NFL Draft in a statement issued by Stanford. ESPN Scouts Inc. evaluated him as the second-best tight end prospect in the draft.
He went to the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana, along with nineteen other tight ends. He finished all positional and combine drills, came in second in the bench press, third in the three-cone drill, and ninth overall in the 40-yard dash for tight ends.
Ertz attended Stanford’s pro day on March 24, 2013, and decided to rerun some of the drills in an effort to improve his vertical and broad jump as well as cut down on some of his times.
