Subsequently, Umar Iliya Damagum pursued his studies at the University of Maiduguri and acquired a bachelor’s degree in arts education. He also holds a post-graduate diploma in management and a master’s degree in business administration from the same university.

Umar Damagum commenced his professional journey as the Head of Banking Operations at Allied Bank Plc. He served on the boards of both Yobe State Investment and Yobe State Housing Corporation.

From 1995 to 2004, he held the positions of Director at First Services Nigeria Ltd and Managing Director and Chairman at Family Investment Nigeria Ltd. Later, he joined the Nigerian Shippers Council.

Umar Damagum not only served as the former Nigerian Ambassador to Romania but also held various significant roles such as the Financial Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party in Yobe State from 1998 to 2000 and the secretary of the PDP National Reconciliation Committee in 2013.
