On April 29, Phoenix police responded to what was described as a “desert area” near 6500 E. Libby Street after receiving a report of an injured person. Phoenix Homicide Lt. James Hester said at a news conference Wednesday that they believe someone may have seen the suspect before or after the attack and called on the community to come together to help find him. “We believe someone would have noticed this person before the attack or after he fled our scene,” Lt. Hester said.

No further details about the murder, including how Heike was killed or whether a weapon was used, have been released, and police are concerned that such information would harm the investigation. “The behavior, in my opinion, was so egregious that I would imagine the subject would display symptoms that seem out of character,” Lt. Hester added.

At Wednesday’s press conference, Heike’s heartbroken family and friends gathered to plead with the public for any information that could bring the police closer to finding the killer. Lana Heike described her daughter as a beautiful, caring woman who was sweet to everyone she met.

“We want someone to come forward and help us find this person,” said Lana, Heike’s mother. ‘Someone wearing a backpack or a hoodie or whatever the video is, it’s hard to tell on a hot sunny day, that person is going to stand out. When you’ve done something, you’ll be unusual,” Lana added.

“I just woke up to all the police coming in, and you could actually see all the vehicles in the back, driving, all the police. I’d say the neighborhood is a bit shady at the moment. They’re probably a little sketchy, looking over their shoulder. It’s definitely not something they saw coming,” a neighbor said.

“It’s heartbreaking,” hiker Tom Chamberlain told Fox13 Seattle. ‘I wouldn’t feel comfortable if she was walking this path alone right now. Before, I thought it was North Scottsdale. It’s totally fine. Some have suggested that warning signs should be posted in the community.
