Charley Frank Pride was born on March 18, 1934 in Sledge, Mississippi, United States. Initially, his father wanted to name him Charl but a clerical error on his birth certificate made his legal name Charley instead.

Charley was the fourth of eleven children birthed by sharecroppers. He had two brothers and eight sisters. Mark Pride, his elder brother did play for some time in the Negro league baseball before changing occupation and went into ministry.

At age 14, Pride taught himself how to play the guitar after his mother bought him his first. He had interest in music since his childhood but always wanted to be a professional baseball player.

Pride began pitching for the Negro American League’s Memphis Red Sox in 1952 as a way to fulfill his childhood dream of playing baseball professionally. A year after in 1953, he signed with the minor league Boise Yankees.

Pride returned to the Negro leagues later that season to play with the Louisville Clippers, and then with the Birmingham Black Barons. After pitching for a number of other minor league teams, Pride was drafted into the US Army in 1956.

He continued to play baseball while stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado. Following his discharge in 1958, Pride returned to his former team the Memphis Red Sox. In 1960, he briefly played for the Missoula Timberjacks.

While living in Montana, Pride performed at local venues both solo and with a four-piece band called the Night Hawks. Soon enough, thanks to the help of RCA Victor producer Chet Atkins, Pride landed a contract with the label. He released his first RCA Victor single, “The Snakes Crawl at Night,” in 1966.

This was followed by the single “Before I Met You.” Neither song charted. Pride had his commercial breakthrough with his third single, “Just Between You and Me,” which broke onto the country charts in 1967.

In 1974, Pride sang the national anthem before Super Bowl VIII. Later, at the World Series in 1980, he sang the national anthem before the sixth and final game, which became the most-watched game in the history of the World Series.

Pride returned to the World Series in 2010 to sing the national anthem before the fifth and final game. In 2016, he was chosen as one of 30 artists to sing on the mashup track “Forever Country.” The next year, Pride released the album “Music in My Heart.”

Charley Pride was married Rozene, a lady he met while playing baseball in Memphis. The couple tied the knot in 1956. They went on to raise three children. sons Dion and Kraig and a daughter Angela. Pride had a fourth child, Tyler outside of his marriage when he had an affair with flight attendant.

On December 12, 2020, Pride died from COVID-19 related complications in Dallas.
