On the advice of local Democratic Party officials, she was chosen by Governor Mike Easley in March 2007 to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of state Representative James B. Black in the 100th district.
Cotham, who is 28 years old, was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives as the youngest woman and member of the state legislature during the 2007–2008 session. From 2008 to 2010, Cotham co-chaired the House subcommittee on K–12 education.
She received the Young Alumna of the Year award from the UNC Chapel Hill School of Education in 2008, and the North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) gave Cotham a “A+” rating as a legislator.
Cotham began her first year of classroom teaching in 2001, the year before she entered the legislature. She taught social studies and won the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District’s award for Most Outstanding First Year Middle School Teacher of the East Region.
In the fall of 2006, she began her first year as an assistant principal at East Mecklenburg High School. In March 2007, she was appointed to the legislature.
In 2016, Cotham made the decision not to seek reelection. Later, when the 12th congressional district had been redrew, she declared that she would think about running for office.
On March 21, 2016, Cotham filed to run for the position, but incumbent Congresswoman Alma Adams defeated her in the primary.
She was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives again in 2022. Cotham was slated to change parties from Democratic to Republican, it was revealed in April 2023. The 4th of April saw a story from WRAL-TV in North Carolina stating that Cotham had previously altered her party registration.
Cotham officially announced on April 5, 2023, that she was leaving the Democratic Party and joining the Republican Party, giving the latter a veto-proof majority and enabling them to pass legislation ranging from abortion restrictions to educational reforms without consulting the Democratic Governor.
She stated that she was going because she was harassed about wearing the American flag on her vehicles and in her social media posts.
