This post contains the poorest president in Africa, who might also be the world’s poorest leader and the least corrupt.
In one of our posts, we published a list of 10 African richest presidents and their Net worth. This time, we are writing on the poorest president in Africa. You would be amazed that Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has been labelled as the poorest leader in sub Saharan Africa and possibly the least corrupt leader in Africa.
The reason is based on his asset declaration prior to his inauguration in May 29 where he had N30 million which is equivalent to $150,000. In a report by The Washington Post, the declaration showed that the president is not in the league of rich African leaders.
Although, Nigeria might not be on the list of Richest Countries in Africa, Nigeria tops the list of most corrupt countries in Africa 2018. President Buhari was elected because of his acclaimed record and promise of ending corruption whilst showing a sense of transparency.
Meanwhile, according to current Forbes ranking of wealthiest presidents, Jose Eduardo dos Santos of Angola is the richest African president with Net Worth of $20 million
Here is an update on the poorest african president this 2018
1. Muhammadu Buhari
has been dubbed the poorest African leader with an estimated net worth of $150,000. Much has been debated about this because its unlikely that he is that poor due to his assets.
A report pegges his worth at N30 million in Naira and he has spent 3 years in power and want to recontest the 2019 presidential election in the country. The reign of Buhari as president has been characterised with blood shed, increased poverty levels and hike in price of commodities according to Washington Post.
Some of the assets Buhari owns include: five homes and two mud houses in his native home in Daura Local Government Area of Katsina State, Nigeria, an orchard and ranch with 270 head of cattle, 25 sheep, five horses and poultry farms. All these he claims he got with his personal savings.
2. Idriss Deby
Idriss is another poor president in Africa with an estimated net worth of $50 Million. Its funny how such amount can be regarded as one being poor especially for a man who has stayed in power for 27 years and is still counting.
Idriss Deby is the president of Chad in Sub-saharan africa and has been in power since 1990. This african leader has a record of human right abuse especially towards the opposition. No wonder he has remained in power for this long.
Conclusion
It is very hard for you to find an African president or head of state that is poor because once they occupy the highest seat in the land, they use public funds to enrich themselves at the expense of the masses that they govern. For now, these are the two poorest African presidents we could research on this 2018.
