Wilkins was a peripheral figure in the Knicks team for his first couple of seasons. His role minimized with the arrival of shooting guard John Starks in 1990 and a further down the pecking order with the arrival of small forward Xavier McDaniel in 1992.
Wilkins became a free agent at the end of 1992 season and was signed by the Cleveland Cavaliers whose core members of the team were Mark Price, Larry Nance, and Brad Daugherty. They made the 1993 NBA Playoffs but were defeated by Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.
Due to injuries, his importance dwindled and he was shipped off to Vancouver Grizzlies in the expansion draft but his injuries woes continued and couldn’t make an impact for the Grizzlies.
Wilkins signed as a free agent with the Orlando Magic just after a year with the Grizzlies. The Magic signed him up again for 1997–98 with a $300,000 contract. In 1999, he signed a three-year contract worth $7 million.
Just like his elder brother Dominique, Wilkins participated in the 1986 and 1987 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, where he finished 4th and tied for 7th out of 8, respectively.
