Syamsul Yusof Career
Syamsul Yusof began directing and acting in numerous TV series for RTM and TV3 between 2003 and 2007, including Gerak Khas, Sembilu Kasih, Air Mata Maria, and Tragedi Oktober. His father initially rejected the script for his debut feature film, Evolusi KL Drift, which he co-wrote with his cousin Rizal Ashreff and directed in 2007. Following the adjustment, his debut film project was eventually authorized with a RM 1.35 million budget. Despite his inexperience as a director and the tremendous pressure to uphold his family’s legacy, Evolusi KL Drift garnered positive reviews when it was released on April 3, 2008.
The success of the movie opened the door for a number of future directing projects. Following the success of his directing debut, Bohsia: Jangan Pilih Jalan Hitam received negative press because of the film’s title’s problems with the vulgar language used and certain copyright difficulties. But he was able to survive. In spite of the criticism, the movie was a hit. He then carried on directing the follow-up to Evolusi KL Drift, which was published on March 25, 2010.
The movie was well-received both critically and commercially, and Syamsul won the Best Director prize at the 23rd Malaysian Film Festival. Syamsul also experiments with music. Together with Anwar Fazal, he once created the EP The Love Legacy. The EP included the songs “Bidadari,” “Apakah Semuanya Itu,” “Ya Robbi,” and “Hingga Hujung Dunia,” which were all used on the soundtracks for Khurafat and Evolusi KL Drift 2. (soundtrack for Aku Bukan Tomboy). In 2016, he released “Kalah Dalam Menang,” a new song he co-wrote with the artist Mawi. The song served as the soundtrack for his most recent movie, Munafik. He continued to work with Mawi on a later song, “Bukan Propaganda,” which was featured on the Desolasi soundtrack. Munafik 3 will be the third installment in the critically acclaimed Munafik film series and the sequel to the hugely popular Munafik 2, Syamsul said on his Instagram account in the month of October 2020.
