Senzo Meyiwa: Accuseds’ lawyer wants court to pursue Kelly Khumalo

Malesela Teffo is the newly appointed lawyer for four of the five men who are accused of Senzo Meyiwa’s murder. The former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper’s murder case is still going, nearly eight years after his death.

Lawyer submits representations for Meyiwa trial to stop
Teffo has submitted representations to the State for the trial to be discontinued. He wants the court to turn its focus on Meyiwa’s then-girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo as well as others who were present on the night Meyiwa was murdered.

An inquiry at the Pretoria High Court on Thursday, 17 March, was held in order to confirm the five accused legal representatives, according to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

Teffo represents four of the five accused

Mthokoziseni Ziphozonke Mphaisa, 35, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, 34, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, 30, and Mthobisi Prince Ncube, 36, confirmed to the presiding judge that they had dropped their previous legal representatives.

While the four are being represented by Teffo, the fifth suspect in the case Fisokuhle Ntuli has his own lawyer.

Teffo spoke about the submission for the discontinuation of the current case, reports SowetanLIVE. He also submitted representations to the State for the perjury case against the six witnesses who were supposedly in the house the day Meyiwa was shot dead to continue.

In October 2014, the soccer star was gunned down in Vosloorus, Johannesburg east. The incident was described as a robbery gone wrong. At the time, Kell Khumalo, her sister Zandi and Zandi’s boyfriend Lognwe Twala his friends Mthokozisi Twala and Tumelo Madlala as well as Khumalo’s mother Ntombi were present.

Judge lays down the law for the case

The judge stressed that delays in Meyiwa’s case should be avoided. He indicated that the State has the right to decide who to charge. Adding that if the defence was dissatisfied with the decision they had the choice to bring forth a separate application.

The court ordered the defence to specify its preparedness either on or before 28 March in order for the trial to continue.

The date set down for the trial is 11 April 2022.
