In 1975 she suffered an accident that left her paraplegic, after colliding with a rock in an accident at sea.

During her life, she received several distinctions, such as an honorary doctorate from the Interamerican University and the public service medal from the Felisa Rincón de Gautier Foundation, among others.

Similarly, a television studio on Telemundo bears her name.
