From 2014 through 2018, Lafferty competed in collegiate hockey at Brown. On January 3, 2015, he scored his first goal for the university against Denver. Lafferty signed an amateur tryout deal with the Penguins for the rest of the 2017–18 campaign on March 7, 2018, putting an end to his college career.
