From 2014 through 2018, Lafferty competed in collegiate hockey at Brown. On January 3, 2015, he scored his first goal for the university against Denver. Lafferty received Third Team All-ECAC and Second Team All-Ivy League honors in 2016–17 and 2017–18, respectively. On February 23, 2018, he defeated Harvard and recorded his first hat-trick as a college player.

Lafferty played four seasons of collegiate hockey with the Brown Bears men’s ice hockey team from 2014 to 2018 despite being selected. Lafferty participated in Division I golf while playing hockey as a freshman, earning a spot in the 2015 Ivy League Men’s Golf Championship. Lafferty’s offensive production dropped the next year, as he ended the campaign with four goals and six assists for 10 points.
Lafferty also had nine games with multiple points, including two with four points. Lafferty was chosen to the Third Team All-Ivy League and the All-ECAC Third Team at the end of the season. Additionally, he received the Team MVP honor and was chosen as a nominee for the Walter Brown Award for New England’s top American-born college hockey player.
Lafferty signed an amateur tryout deal with the Penguins for the rest of the 2017–18 campaign on March 7, 2018, putting an end to his college career. Additionally, he agreed to a two-year, entry-level deal with the Penguins that will start in the 2018–19 campaign.
