Russia sends message to Nigeria govt. amid Ukraine Invasion
A powerful message has been sent to Nigeria amid the war with Ukraine.
Russia has assured the Federal Government that Nigerians are not targeted in the ongoing cr!sis between them and Ukraine.
This was stated by Russia’s Ambassador, Alexei Shebarshin, during a meeting with Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, on Friday, February 26 in Abuja.
Following the escalating violence triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Thursday, the minister summoned Shebarshin and Ukraine’s envoy, Kirdoda Valerii.
Onyeama told journalists shortly after the meeting that during his discussion with the Russian envoy, he expressed the Nigerian government’s displeasure with the violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, which is a UN member state with which Nigeria has diplomatic relations.
According to Onyeama, the Russian envoy promised to convey the Nigerian government’s concerns to his home country, and that Russia regards Nigeria as a friendly country that would do nothing to harm its citizens. The envoy assured the minister that their action would be limited to military installations rather than civilian areas.
