Hodgson began his playing career as a defender for Crystal Palace in 1965. However, he did not make many appearances for the club and moved to non-league football in 1969 to play for Maidstone United. Hodgson retired from playing in 1976 to focus on coaching.

Hodgson’s coaching career began at Halmstad in Sweden, where he worked as an assistant coach before taking over as head coach in 1976. He led Halmstad to their first-ever Swedish league title in 1976 and also won the Swedish Cup in 1979.
