We are heartbroken to share the news that our trumpet player Rich Armstrong passed away today. We are all in shock. Rich was an incredibly talented musician and a great friend. Our hearts go out to his family.
Who is Rich Armstrong?
Rich Armstrong is the most popular multi-instrumentalist in the Bay Area, jumping between guitar, trumpet, percussion, and vocals with ease.
With Josh Groban, Lydia Pense & Cold Blood, Lyrics Born, Train, Tony! Toni! Tone!, Thomas Dolby, and Boz Scaggs, among others, he has performed, toured, and recorded throughout his illustrious career.
He has also shared the stage with Petula Clarke, Train, Spoon, and Jody Watley. Rich spent 15 years as the musical director and longtime band member of the now-famous yet incredibly brilliant Michelle Shocked, touring virtually every state and continent with her.
Rich is a consistent and valuable contributor to SF’s renowned Jazz Mafia and the bandleader of the 415s, the city’s most popular dance band (the415s.com).
Armstrong has also recorded frequently with renowned producer Narada Michael Walden (Mariah/Whitney) and has collaborated on a couple of albums with jazz vocalist Roberta Donnay.
He is putting the finishing touches on his own full-length album to show off his songwriting skills.
Also, he is a founding member of the Crossroads Live Music Experience, which for the past five years has presented top-tier live concert music to Burning Man.
Rich is the music director at the Waldorf School of the Peninsula and also takes music education extremely seriously.
Also, he spends a lot of time encouraging young people to participate in music, and he views the success of his grassroots initiatives as his proudest accomplishment.
He recently composed original music for the independent movie “Frank’s Last Job” and made a significant contribution to the critically acclaimed independent short “Rollercoaster.”
