“Rector Must Go”, Ede Poly Students Chants in Protest

The students of the Federal Polytechnic Polytechnic Ede has taken to the streets o⁶f the school to protest against the administration of Rector of the Institutions, Dr John Taiwo Adekolawole.

The protest was said to have been aggravated by the ‘Sit-Down Strike’ embarked upon by Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), which led to students not being able to recieve lectures since they resumed.

The keyword in the mouth of the protesting students as well as the inscription on their placard is that “Rector Must Go”, “Registrar Must Go”, “DSA Must Go”, “Bad Governance Must End”, “Poor Leadership Must End”, among other.

Affairs TV gathered that the school called for resumption of students and academic activities on the 14th of September 2020 and till date, no academic activities have commenced.

This prompted the Student Union Government of the school to move its members to protest and barricade the entry and exit gate of the school, making it impossible for the staff who were already in the school to leave the school with their cars.

It was also gathered that ASUP embarked on the strike because of the 42-months of allowance that they are being owed as well as a demand that the management of the polytechnic is yet to fully put in place all the necessary COVID-19 guidelines as required by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

However Affairs TV reporter who was at the main campus of the school sighted some wash hand basins at the main entrance of the school with water running in it.

President of Student Union Government of the Polytechnic, Ajibade Quasim Adekunle explained that their only demand from the school management is that academic activities should resume fully and students will vacate the barricades and return to class.

He noted that the aggravation became stronger when the school management released a statement signed by the Registrar of the institution that “due to nationwide EndSARS protest and the challenge of COVID-19 that still lingers, students are advised to return home”. This he described as unacceptable.

He stressed further that the school management and by extension the government should help to solve the transportation issue that has bedeviled the students making it difficult for students to go between the old and new campus.

In his response, the Protocol/Public Relation Officer of the Polytechnic, Mr Sola Lawal commends the students for cooperation and coordination so far, he noted that the school management have heard the voice of the student and will take steps to ensure that their demands are met.

He then pleaded with the students to adhere by the memo that the school management released
