Reactions Trail Sterling’s Drop From England Team Over Row With Gomez
Football fans across the world are reacting to the dropping of Manchester City attacker Raheem Sterling from the team to face Montenegro in a European Qualifier on Thursday.
England manager Gareth Southgate decided to do away with Sterling in prosecuting the match following a row involving the City star and Liverpool’s Joe Gomez at St George’s Park.
Southgate said that “emotions were still raw” after Sterling was involved in a clash with Gomez towards the end of Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Premier League title rivals Manchester City on Sunday.
It is understood the pair were again involved in a row in the St George’s Park canteen after meeting up for England duty on Monday, leading to Sterling’s withdrawal from selection for the game with Montenegro at Wembley.
Southgate’s action has generated a lot of reactions on Twitter. Below are some of the comments:
The ruck between Sterling and Gomez was no shock – footballers are passionate. I remember one ugly episode with England; Nigel Martyn stubbed his toe and Nick Barmby chuckled and said, “Oop, careful there.” Nigel laughed too, but I quickly leapt in to ensure it didn’t escalate.

Raheem Sterling must be in the wrong because to drop one of Europe's best forwards for a young CB is odd. Fair play to Southgate! Shows that clout means nowt if you're wrong

Understand #lfc Joe Gomez appealed to Gareth Southgate not to send #mcfc Raheem Sterling home, before the England manager made his decision to drop Sterling from the Montenegro game.

England's national team used to be an oasis of peace, cohesion & unity. Just as he did with the Spanish national team when he was in a rivalry with Madrid , Pep Guardiola's toxicity & desperation is now threatening to shatter that peace with the Sterling episode. Good morning. 😊

Sterling lol. If Jose was his manager, we would have heard how he was casing problems in the English National squad. I remember how they brainwashed some people that Jose cased problems in the Spanish camp.

This is why England will never succeed! @sterling7 is by far the best England player but they’d rather hinder the team to try make him out to be a bad egg, successful teams would have kept that in-house and defo got a positive reaction out of both players come matchday..

Surprised to see Gareth Southgate throw @sterling7 to the wolves. Why didn’t he just handle it internally? Nothing wrong with a bit of feistiness between teammates, and all got resolved very quickly.
