Pastor Abiona, Retired Deputy General Overseer of RCCG Is Dead

Pastor J.H. Abiona, the Redeemed Christian Church of God’s retired Deputy General Overseer, has died.

The death of the 96-year-old retired DGO of the church was verified by a church official to The PUNCH on Saturday.

The church is likely to issue an official statement on Abiona’s death soon, according to the official who requested anonymity.

Abiona was one of the church’s renowned elders. Following the death of the founder, Pa Josiah Akindayomi, he was named acting General Superintendent.

Abiona had managed the church’s leadership transition from Akindayomi to the current General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, in 1981, and withstood the turmoil caused by those eager to head the church against God’s will, which had been made clear to them previously.

Abiona was considered as one of the saints because of his humility and dedication to God’s mission in the church.

“I thank God that we insisted on doing God’s will and today everyone can see that the successor was God’s choice.”
