Nex Benedict Cause of Death, Biography, Age, Autopsy, Parents, Partner, Gender, Family – On Thursday, February 8, 2024, nonbinary teenager, Nex Benedict was found dead at home, a day after an altercation at school, Oklahoma High School.
According to an autopsy report summary released on Wednesday by the Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s office, the 16-year-old died by suicide.
The report shows Benedict had toxic levels of two drugs in their system and died of an overdose. The full report will be released on March 27.
Benedict, a member of the 2SLGBTQ community, died one day after getting into a physical fight with several other students at Owasso High School.
Family members said Benedict had been bullied at school. The teenager reportedly collapsed at home and was later pronounced dead.
Paramedics responded to the family’s house and performed CPR on the teen before rushing them to the hospital, where they later died.
2SLGBTQ includes Two Spirit, an umbrella term used to describe a third gender in Native and Indigenous communities.
Family members have said Benedict was nonbinary, which means they didn’t identify as strictly male or female.
The teenager’s death drew concern from LGBTQ+ rights groups, as well as attention from Oklahoma’s governor and the White House.
In video footage from the hospital on the day of the altercation, Benedict explains to an officer that the girls had been picking on them and their friends because of the way they dressed.
Benedict claims that in the bathroom the students said “something like: why do they laugh like that,” referring to Benedict and their friends.
“And so I went up there and I poured water on them, and then all three of them came at me,” Benedict tells the officer from a hospital bed.
