Nelly Cheboi quit her job to create computer labs for Kenyan school children in 2019. She created computer labs “TechLit Africa” for Kenyan Schoolchildren by using old computers to open new worlds for young Kenyans.
She worked as a software engineer and business analyst at New World Van Lines for a year and 4 months in Greater Chicago Area.
She had been a software engineer at ShipBob, Inc. from January 2018 to April 2019.
She was the full stack engineer at Kodable from January 2020 to September 2020.
The 16th Annual CNN Heroes show hosted by Anderson Cooper and Kelly Ripa was aired from New York City on 11 December night in New York where online voters selected her name among this year’s Top 10 CNN Heroes.
She will receive $100,000 to expand her work. She will be named an Elevate Prize Winner for receiving additional support worth $200,000 for her nonprofit. She told CNN,
“When I discovered computer science, I just fell in love with it. I knew that this is something that I wanted to do as my career, and also bring it to my community.”
She added,
“I feel so accomplished seeing kids that are 7 years old touch-typing, knowing that I just learned how to touch-type less than five years ago.”
She added,
“We have kids here (in Kenya) — myself included, back in the day — who don’t even know what a computer is. At one point, I was bringing 44 computers, and I paid more for the luggage than I did for the air ticket.”
She got the award at the 2022 CNN Heroes of the Year with her mother. She along with her mother sang a song onstage.
