Thakur began his education at Anand Ashram Convent English High School, Palghar, Mumbai. After passing his metric level examination, he went to Swami Vivekanand International School, passing his intermediate level examination before enrolling to Mumbai University.

Thakur was included in India’s 16-man squad for India’s Test tour of West Indies in 2016, but he did not play. He was again named in India’s limited-overs squad for the series against Sri Lanka, making his One Day International (ODI) debut on 31 August 2017 against Sri Lanka.
At the 2014 IPL player auction, Thakur was signed by Kings XI Punjab ahead of the 2015 season of Indian Premier League (IPL). He made his debut in a game against Delhi Daredevils, where he took just one wicket in four overs.
Thakur joined the Rising Pune Supergiants in March 2017 for the tenth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). After just a season, he was bought by Chennai Super Kings in January 2018.
In February 2022, he was bought by Delhi Capitals in the auction for the 2022 Indian Premier League tournament.[32] After playing in 14 matches during the season, in November 2022 he was traded to the Kolkata Knight Riders in exchange for Aman Khan ahead of the auctions for the 2023 season of IPL.
