Michael Vaughan Career
Vaughan is a former all-around cricket player who now works as an English cricket pundit.
From 2003 to 2008, from 2003 to 2007, and from 2005 to 2007, he served as England’s first Twenty20 captain. He also captained the one-day international squad and the test team for England. In the home sphere, he was Yorkshire’s representative.
Though he frequently batted in the middle of the order for England, Vaughan was a good right-handed opening hitter who formed a successful England combination with Marcus Trescothick.
As a result of his 633 runs, including three centuries, during the 2002–2003 Ashes, he was recognized as one of the top hitters in the world.
The highlight of Vaughan’s captaincy career came with a 2-1 victory in the 2005 Ashes, England’s first Ashes victory in 18 years (since 1986/87).
Vaughan captained England in 51 Tests, winning 26 (a then-national record) and losing 11; England won all seven home Tests of the 2004 summer under Vaughan; and England won all seven away Tests under Vaughan.
In the latter part of his career, Vaughan’s batting suffered due to a recurring knee injury, his decision to bat lower in the order to make room for other opening batsmen (Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook), and the demands of captaincy. In Tests, he averaged 50.95 when he wasn’t captain and 36.02 when he was. On June 30, 2009, Vaughan declared his retirement from first-class cricket.
After his outstanding batting in 2002, Vaughan was selected as one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 2003 and became the first player to ever appear on the cover of cricket’s bible Wisden (in the same year).
He received an honorary doctorate from Sheffield Hallam University in August 2005 in recognition of his contributions to the game. After leading England to victory in the Ashes, he was given the Freedom of the City of Sheffield in September 2005.
The BBC Sports Personality of the Year Team Award went to the England cricket team in December 2005. While Vaughan was nominated, his colleague Andrew Flintoff won the Sports Personality of the Year award.
The whole Ashes-winning England cricket team received the Queen’s New Year’s Honours on December 31, 2005. Vaughan, team coach Duncan Fletcher, and manager Phil Neale received OBEs, while the rest of the team received MBEs.
