Michael Beale Career
The next stage in Beale’s football career was to use some of the money he had earned as a young player to start a youth futsal club in his native Bromley, South London.
In 2002, Chelsea Academy manager Neil Bath gave him a position as a part-time young coach at their Cobham Training Center, where he served as assistant coach of Chelsea’s Under-7s and Under-9s squads. It was while instructing children here that he drew Bath’s notice.
Beale accepted a job offer to work at the Liverpool Academy, initially as the coach of the Under-15s team before moving up to become the coach of the Under-21s, after admitting to becoming somewhat frustrated with the lack of progression of young players into Chelsea’s first team since Roman Abramovich’s takeover in 2003.
Beale and Steven Gerrard initially collaborated in this capacity; at the time, Gerrard was the Liverpool Under-18s’ head coach.
Beale, a longtime supporter of South American football, agreed to travel to Brazilian team So Paulo in January 2017 and began learning Portuguese so that he could help Rogério Ceni.
But following a run of disappointing outcomes, Ceni and his backroom staff were fired six months later.
After working briefly again with Liverpool’s development program, Steven Gerrard got in touch with Beale about taking over as the first-team coach at Rangers.
Rangers won their 55th league championship in three years in Scotland under Gerrard, Beale, and Gary McAllister in the 2020–21 season, stopping city rivals Celtic from winning 10 straight league titles.
After Dean Smith was fired, Gerrard received an offer to coach Aston Villa in November 2021. He was followed to the Premier League team by Beale and McAllister. Beale was hired as the first team coach of Championship club Queens Park Rangers on June 1, 2022.
His career at QPR got off to a mixed start; he only won one of his first five games there, lost at home to Blackpool (who were ultimately relegated that same season), and only managed to earn a point at Sunderland thanks to the heroics of Ilias Chair and Seny Dieng, who both scored in stoppage time to salvage an unlikely point.
When Beale and QPR hit their stride, they won eight out of their next eleven league games and raced to the top of the Championship standings.
However, they lost four of their following five games, demonstrating that their form was just transitory. They lost at home to Huddersfield and West Brom and were soundly defeated at Birmingham and Coventry.
Wolverhampton Wanderers allegedly sought Beale to become their new manager in October 2022, while QPR was leading the Championship, but Beale apparently declined.
On November 28, 2022, Beale agreed to leave QPR to take the managerial position at Rangers in Scotland, where he had previously served as the first-team coach under Steven Gerrard.
Beale led Rangers to four straight victories to start his management career, earning him the title of Scottish Premiership manager of the month for December.
