MAPOLY crisis: MAPSU meeting with OBJ, ASUP ends in futility

Hopes of salvaging the crises rocking Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, MAPOLY, Abeokuta may be in shambles as a meeting between MAPOLY Students leaders and Former President Olusegun Obasanjo ended in futility.

The union had earlier met with the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, MAPOLY chapter on Tuesday to hold talks on commencement of exams and bare the mind of students to them.

Student leaders of MAPOLY alongside other institutions in Ogun State were on Wednesday in a closed door meeting with the former president at his Olusegun Obasanjo Presidentila Library (OOPL) residence to discuss the state of education in the state.

The meeting which lasted till late in the night was according to MAPOLY delegation to seek advice in redeeming the image of the institution and finding lasting solutions to its current crises.

Obasanjo who was quoted to have berated the attention given to education in the state urged the students’ leaders to continue the struggle to ensure better education in the state.

A statement signed by the MAPOLY students Union President Owoiya Rasaq and PRO Taiwo Aduragbemi said the former president gave some discreet advices which according to them will not be disclosed for security reasons.

The union had earlier met with the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, MAPOLY chapter on Tuesday to hold talks on commencement of exams and bare the mind of students to them.

The two hour meeting between MAPSU and ASUP however ended in futility as the lecturers are resolved not to resume duties until their November 2017 salary is paid.

The ASUP chairman, Kola Ajibola also went on air to officially declare that MAPOLY has joined the ASUP nationwide strike.

Speaking on the commencement of exams and resumption date, Ajibola said the management is to be question on when examinations will commence.

He also added that the management announced the resumption date and that the union had nothing to do with it.

Owoiya however, urged students ‘to come together as one and fight common enemies irrespective of political ideology, interest, departments and perspectives.’
