Dykes spent a portion of his childhood living and playing rugby league in Canberra, where his family had settled. Dykes piqued the Canberra Raiders’ interest after assisting the Gungahlin Bulls to a cup final victory. Dykes was injured and his family returned to the Gold Coast, so the move never happened.
