Kevin and his wife Tiunna had been trying to have children for 14 years. Last year, they had hopes of adopting two daughters, twins, which ultimately fell through.

Tiunna had tried to help a young pregnant mother who could not raise her children due to the circumstances of her pregnancy. She had tried to secure the young woman an adoption agency, but the mother allegedly said she would only go through with the pregnancy if Tiunna and Kevin Lemons adopted her babies (she was pregnant with twin daughters). The couple drove to North Carolina to collect the children, but it was revealed that the young mother was no longer at the hospital.
