In high school, Kendrick Lamar started putting out music under the stage name K.Dot. In 2005, he became a member of Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) and helped form the hip-hop supergroup Black Hippy. After his debut album Section.80 (2011), which was well received by critics, Lamar signed a partnership contract with Interscope Records and Aftermath Entertainment.
