Born in Germantown, Tennessee, Baker was exposed to music early on by performing at her church as she was raised in a devoted Baptist family.

Baker started writing songs on her own during her first year at MTSU, frequently using the university’s late-night practice spaces.

She stated that she never imagined the EP would be heard by a large audience; she posted it on Bandcamp so that her friends could hear it.

She penned what would become Sprained Ankle in her dorm room and recorded it on free studio time that a friend of hers had obtained from an internship.

However, 6131 Records found it and acquired it, turning it into the studio album Sprained Ankle, which was released in October 2015.

Many year-end lists for 2015 had Sprained Ankle at the top, and because of its popularity, it was highlighted in The New Yorker and The New York Times. Critics have praised the book as “heartbreaking,” “hypnotic,” and “striking.”

The first of Baker’s afterwards four performances at the desk took place at an NPR Tiny Desk performance in March 2016.

She joined Matador Records in 2017 and put out a 7-inch single with the songs “Distant Solar Systems” and “Funeral Pyre” (formerly known as “Sad Song 11”).

Turn Out the Lights, her second album, was created at Ardent Studios in Memphis with engineer and producer Calvin Lauber and released on October 27, 2017, to much fanfare.

In August of that year, the trio released three songs. They then announced an eponymous EP, Boygenius, which was published on October 26, 2018, to resounding critical praise.

Baker released two 7-inch singles in 2019. The first, which was released in June, included the songs “Red Door” and “Conversation Piece,” while the second, which was released in October as part of the Sub Pop singles series, included the songs “Tokyo” and “Sucker Punch.”

The four songs were well praised and all had a slightly more polished sound than her earlier work.

On October 21, 2020, Baker released the lead single “Faith Healer” off her upcoming third studio album, Little Oblivions, along with an essay written by poet Hanif Abdurraqib.

Ahead of Little Oblivions’ release on February 26, 2021, were the singles “Hardline” and “Favor.”

The majority of it was composed in 2019, which was a challenging and formative year for Baker as she had to postpone several tour dates, battled with her sobriety and mental health, and eventually went back to school to finish her degree at MTSU.

She made an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in January and sang the song “Faith Healer.” A B-Side EP to “Little Oblivions” and the song “Guthrie” were both shared by Baker in 2022.
