Garrett was originally chosen by the St. Louis Blues in the first round of the 1971 NHL Entry Draft.

He spent one season with the Blues CHL affiliate before spending half a se ason with the Portland Buckaroos of the WHL and finally joining the Richmond Robins of the AHL.

In 1973–74, he signed a contract with the World Hockey Association’s Minnesota Fighting Saints. He would continue to play with the Fighting Saints until their dissolution on February 25, 1976.

He later got a contract with the Toronto Toros and would move to Birmingham to join the Toros franchise. Garrett was acquired by the New England Whalers during the final WHA season and stayed with the team when it made its NHL debut.

During the 2002–03 season, Garrett has been Sportsnet Pacific’s color analyst for Canucks games, first working alongside Jim Hughson and then John Shorthouse.

Moreover, he occasionally had network jobs on Sportsnet or City after Rogers bought the NHL’s Canadian national contract in 2014. He also occasionally received network assignments on HNIC.
