Jamie Reid was born in 1947 in the Croydon district of London, England. He was brought up in a politically active family, as his grandfather was a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and his father was a trade unionist. Reid attended John Ruskin Grammar School in Croydon, where he developed an interest in art and politics.

He enrolled at Wimbledon Art College, where he met fellow student and future Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren. After that, he joined Croydon Art College, where he studied under the influence of the Situationist International, a radical political and artistic movement. In 1970, he left Croydon for central London, where he became involved in various underground publications and activities.

Jamie Reid’s career was defined by the British punk explosion of the late 1970s, where he created memorable artwork for the Sex Pistols and other bands. His style of cutting letters from newspaper headlines and collaging them in a ransom note fashion came to symbolize the rebellious and anarchic spirit of punk rock.

His best known works include the album cover for Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols and the singles “Anarchy in the UK”, “God Save The Queen” (based on a Cecil Beaton photograph of Queen Elizabeth II, with an added safety pin through her nose and swastikas in her eyes), “Pretty Vacant” and “Holidays in the Sun”.

He also designed the Sex Pistols logo, which featured a torn Union Jack flag and a safety pin. His work was controversial and provocative, often drawing criticism and legal action from the authorities and the establishment.

Reid also worked with other punk and post-punk bands, such as The Clash, The Slits, The Damned, The Jam, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Public Image Ltd., The Exploited and Crass. He also collaborated with McLaren on various projects, such as clothing designs for his shop SEX and a film called The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle. Reid also produced artwork for the world music fusion band Afro Celt Sound System.
