Who was Tom Browning?

Thomas Leo Browning was an American professional baseball pitcher. During a 12-year Major League Baseball career, he pitched for the Cincinnati Reds (1984–1994) and the Kansas City Royals (1995). Browning pitched the twelfth perfect game in baseball history on September 16, 1988, against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

He also won the World Series with the Reds in 1990. He is the co-author of Tom Browning’s Tales from the Reds Dugout Browning played college baseball at Le Moyne College in Syracuse from 1979 to 1981.

Tom Browning Career

Browning became the first rookie to win 20 games since Bob Grim of the Yankees in 1954 while pitching for the Reds as a rookie, going 20-9 with a 3.55 ERA. In addition to being voted The Sporting News National League Rookie Pitcher of the Year, Browning concluded the season with 11 straight victories, the longest winning run by a Cincinnati pitcher in 30 years. In the voting for NL Rookie of the Year, he came in second place (behind Vince Coleman).

Due to his superstition, Browning would not shave between races. He consequently frequently appeared in photos with a four-day stubble. On days when he pitched, he also wore red underwear.

In addition, Browning frequently rated among the league’s top pitchers in starts, innings pitched and wins for seven straight seasons. One of his best seasons came in 1988 when he went 18–5 with a 3.41 ERA and teamed with 23-game-winner Danny Jackson.

Browning’s perfect game ticket. The 12th perfect game in baseball history was thrown by Browning on September 16, 1988. At Riverfront Stadium, Browning struck out 102 of 142 batters faced while defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers 1-0. He did not allow a single batter to reach the count of three balls.

Browning is still the only Reds player to have ever pitched a perfect game. He was the first left-hander to do so since Sandy Koufax’s perfect game in 1965. On June 6, 1988, Tony Gwynn’s single with one out in the ninth inning ended Browning’s attempt at a no-hitter. This occurred three months earlier.

Browning just missed becoming the first pitcher to hurl two perfect games, taking another bid into the ninth on July 4, 1989, against the Philadelphia Phillies at Veterans Stadium; a lead-off double by Dickie Thon broke up this attempt.

Tom Browning’s Personal History

Dann Stupp, a Reds staffer, co-wrote Browning’s book Tom Browning’s Tales from the Reds Dugout, which was published in March 2006. Browning was detained on a $99,008.36 bond after being arrested on March 30, 2009, for failing to pay child support.

On February 27, 2018, Browning and his three kids bought Bart’s on York, a small pub in northern Kentucky across the river from Great American Ballpark.

The establishment has been registered as Browning’s on York; the name change became effective on the first day of the 2018 Reds season.

Logan Browning, a pitcher in the Boston Red Sox minor system as of August 2019, is a father. Browning has two brothers and two sisters. Browning was arrested and charged with an OVI (or DUI) for falling asleep and driving his car through a house on August 27, 2022, in Georgetown, Ohio. His BAC was 0.127.

World Series to secure the victory

Before joining the Kansas City Royals in 1995, the left-handed pitcher spent the majority of his career with the Cincinnati Reds from 1984 to 1994. He helped the Reds defeat the Oakland Athletics in Game 3 of the 1990 World Series to secure the victory.

In addition to throwing a perfect game in September 1988, Browning has a 123-90 career record and a 3.94 ERA.

Tom Browning’s Cause of Death

Around 1:00 PM, the Boone County Sheriff’s Office in Kentucky received a call reporting that someone was not breathing inside the residence. When deputies arrived, they discovered Browning unconscious and not breathing on the couch in his home.

Before Browning was declared dead, EMTs and other first responders made several attempts to save him. There is no indication that there was any wrongdoing.
