Who was Ian Bairnson?
The Scottish musician Ian Bairnson is most known for being a founding member of The Alan Parsons Project. Although being a multi-instrumentalist who also played the saxophone and keyboards, his most well-known instrument was the guitar. In addition, he was renowned for preferring the sound of a sixpence over that of a plectrum.
Pilot and The Alan Parsons Project
Before forming the band Pilot in 1973 with David Paton and Billy Lyall, former members of the Bay City Rollers, he worked as a session guitarist. He provided the harmony guitar parts for their hit song “Magic.” He initially worked with record producer Alan Parsons during this period with Pilot on their self-titled debut album.
The majority of the band members—bassist/lead vocalist Paton and drummer Stuart Tosh—were included in the Alan Parsons Project because of this connection. He performed the characteristic guitar solo on the Parsons’ I Robot (1977) album track “I Wouldn’t Want to Be Like You.”
He has played the guitar on every record of the Alan Parsons Project, including the side project Keats from 1984. The songs “Years of Glory” and “I Can’t Get There from Here” from Alan Parsons’ most recent album, The Secret, received guitar solo additions by Bairnson in 2019.
Other works
He contributed to Kate Bush’s first four albums, Lionheart (1978), Never for Ever (1980), and The Dreaming (1980), most notably performing the guitar solo on “Wuthering Heights” on The Kick Within (1978). Also, he collaborated on two of the band Bucks Fizz’s Top 20 successes, “If You Can’t Take the Heat” (1982) and “Run for Your Life,” while performing with them (1983).
He made an appearance on the 2009 album Parzivals Eye by German bassist Chris Postl. Chris Postl was a member of the German band RPWL. His most recent band to tour with him was Junk[4] (Bairnson, Pau Chaffer, Sarah Rope, and ngel Celada). He has contributed to more than a hundred albums over his session career, including those by Yvonne Keeley, Joe Cocker, Jon Anderson, Chris DeBurgh, Mick Fleetwood, and Neil Diamond.
With Sting, Eric Clapton, Beverley Craven, and many more, he performed live. In 2013, Bairnson returned to the UK and collaborated with David Paton to create the CD A Pilot Project, which was a tribute to Eric Woolfson’s legacy. In November 2016, Paton and Bairnson toured Japan with the Pilot revival and songs from the Alan Parsons Project.
