Hospital seizes patient’s body over unpaid N10m medical bill
A Kenyan father , Boniface Mbugua Githenya , has been unable to bury his son , Michael Ngige, who died four months ago .
The burial is being delayed due to Githenya ’ s inability to pay off the three million Kenyan shillings ( over N 10m ) bill incurred while Ngige was in the hospital .
Githenya on Tuesday revealed that the hospital refused to hand over the body to the family for burial unless the hospital bill is settled.
“ We were told that we cannot bury him until we settle the bill.
“ We have tried to negotiate a settlement , but our efforts have been fruitless .
“ Today , we need to settle three million shillings ( N 10, 765, 140) before he is laid to rest .
“ His children are the most affected, their performance in school has dropped.
“ They can’ t concentrate when they know their father is in the mortuary, ” Githenya said .
He added that the governor of Nairobi , Mike Mbuvi Sonko , had contributed Sh 200, 000 ( about N 717, 676) to help settle the hospital bill.
Ngige had died in the hospital after falling at a construction site .
His body has been deposited at the Kenyatta University mortuary.
