Who was Harvey Jett?

Harvey served as Black Oak Arkansas’ first lead guitarist. Harvey Jett traveled the globe with Black Oak Arkansas while serving as its main guitarist, making them one of rock’s most popular bands ever.

Harvey Jett, however, decided to give it all up and give his life to Jesus one night after a performance in St. Louis, Missouri. As a result, we are now able to enjoy the music that Harvey still creates with his CD “Eagles Flight.”

A group of guys with a sound unlike anything I had ever heard emerged from the backwoods of Arkansas in the early 1970s (I want to say closer to 1971), and they included three guitars, an amazing bass, and drums.

The band as a whole covered the vocals, but James Mangram, the lead vocalist, was more than just a “Dandy”; he had a voice unlike any this old boy had ever heard. Talking about singing from the heart, Jim Dandy did that as well as giving the entire band his all.

The group was called “Black Oak Arkansas.” They were a strong band that produced their music and played to packed houses at festivals and stadiums everywhere they went.

They wrote some of their songs in L.A., some while traveling on their bus, and some in New Orleans. This was their way of life, and in my opinion, they worked every night somewhere, even in Europe, where the concerts were hundreds or even thousands of kilometers away. Boy, there are stories out there. As when one of them drugged a shark into the hotel room after he was detained.

  1. I was a close friend of Harvey’s . I was his webmaster and a guitar
buddy. We hooked up a few times on Zoom or over the phone jamming with each other showing different things that we could play on together and have fun . There was never enough of these get togethers. We had talked about recording together for his second cd and my first original music cd when I got to where I could travel to Kentucky. Sometimes Harvey would just call me to check in on me while I was fighting cancer. Harvey was a great inspiration and turned my life around through prayer. We had some very special moments through prayer that was so powerful I knew he was for real much unlike any Christian I had ever met. I know now I will never meet anyone who was so powerful with prayer. I was truly blessed to have been friends with Harvey and I do miss him terribly . I want to pick up the phone and talk to him again like the many times we did talk. I still have his phone number in my phone because I just can’t find a reason to delete it.
Harvey rest in peace. I know you’re where you wanted to be. Hang loose I will be seeing you again when it’s my time. Thank you for being my brother closer than my own flesh and blood could ever be.
