After his junior year, Berhalter quit UNC and joined the Zwolle soccer team in the Netherlands. Later, he played for Crystal Palace in England where he temporarily played alongside Jovan Kirovski, Sparta Rotterdam and SC Cambuur Leeuwarden in the Netherlands, where they later had American-born CEO Alex Pama. Berhalter signed a contract with Bundesliga team Energie Cottbus in 2002. He continued to play for the squad, making 111 league appearances, and served as captain as they won promotion back to the Bundesliga.

Berhalter joined TSV 1860 Munich of the 2. Bundesliga in 2006 and was made the team’s captain. In April 2009, Berhalter returned to the United States after a 15-year stint in Europe. His first club contract in his own nation was with Major League Soccer, which he signed.
