Who was Grand Daddy I.U.?
Ayub Bey, better known by his stage name Grand Daddy I.U., was an American rapper who was a part of the Juice Crew hip-hop group in the 1980s. He died on December 13, 2022.
Grand Daddy I.U. Career
Grand Daddy I.U. was an MC who rose to prominence on the legendary label Cold Chillin’ Records in the late 1980s. After receiving Grand Daddy I.U.’s demo tape via his peer’s brother, the late Biz Markie was crucial in getting him signed.
Two popular songs came from I.U.’s debut album, Smooth Assassin. “Sugar Free” peaked at No. 9, while “Something New” reached its highest position at No. 11. I.U. was included in Nore’s Top 5 Dead or Alive in 2008.
“He’s always been one of the best emcees I’ve appreciated from that late ’80s/early ’90s era,” he stated. If you look closely, the album cover for Jay-Reasonable Z’s Doubt recalls that of I.U.’s album, Smooth Assassin, when he was wearing the same costume. One of the most lyrical and wordplay-savvy emcees was Grand Daddy I.U. Young artists like Murda Mook are unaware that Grand Daddy I.U. was the father of much of their sound.
In the 1990s, Grand Daddy I.U. went on to make guest appearances on a number of hip-hop albums, including Positive K’s The Skills Dat Pay Da Bills and Big L’s Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous.
He released his sophomore album, Lead Pipe, in 1994 after breaking up with Markie. Stick to the Script, Grand Daddy I.U.’s third album, was released in 2007. In July 2021, his most recent song, “Stay Fly,” was released.
