What is Global Talent Stream?

The Global Talent Stream (GTS) is an immigration program initiated through a partnership between Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) to meet the job demand in Canada.

How does the Global Talent Stream (GTS) Work?

The Global Talent Stream (GTS) is an immigration program that assists Canadian employers to hire highly skilled talents from around the world to fill specialized occupations when there aren’t enough Canadians to fill those occupations or roles.

The Global Talent Stream (GTS) is a part of Canada’s Global Skills Strategy to meet the economic needs of Canada. According to data released in June 2019, nearly 40, 000 foreigners had immigrated to Canada in two years into the Global Talent Stream.

The Global Talent Stream and Foreigners

The Global Talent Stream is one of the streams contained within Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP). The Global Talent Stream, therefore, allows highly skilled foreign workers to receive a temporary work permit to work in a specialized occupation in Canada for a specified period of time after which, are required to go back to their home country.

How to apply for the Global Talent Stream as a Foreigner Worker and get a Temporary Work Permit?

The Global Talent Stream (GTS) is an immigration program initiated only for Canadian employers to fill up lacking positions within a specialized occupation. Therefore, you can’t apply directly to the Global Talent Stream as a foreign worker.

However, you can get a job in Canada that is aligned with the Global Talent Stream. Before you do this, you would need to ensure that you meet the definition of “unique and specialized talent” or if your occupation falls on the Global Talent Occupations List (Category A and B).

Category A: To be qualified as a unique and specialized talent, you must have advanced knowledge of the industry, coupled with advanced education and at least 5 years of specialized experience in the field. Foreign workers with unique and specialized talent are paid a minimum annual salary of $80, 000 CAD.

Category B: To land a job aligned with the Global Talent Stream, you will have to be highly skilled in occupations found on the Global Talent Stream Occupation List.

If your employer’s application is successful, they would receive a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). You can use this LMIA to apply for a Canadian work permit that would be processed in about 10 business days.
