Emma Coronel’s path to notoriety began when she participated in the 2007 Coffee and Guava Festival beauty pageant in Canelas, Durango, Mexico. Contestants were required to host a party to promote their candidacy, and Coronel’s event took place on Three Kings Day. It was during this gathering that she reportedly crossed paths with Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, who traveled to Canelas to meet her. On that fateful day, both of them allegedly agreed to marry each other.
Emma Coronel faced arrest at Dulles International Airport on February 22, 2021. The Federal Bureau of Investigation had a warrant for her arrest, citing probable cause based on evidence that she had facilitated communication between Guzmán and associates from the Sinaloa Cartel. She was also accused of assisting Guzmán’s escape from the Federal Social Readaptation Center No. 1 “Altiplano” in 2015 through bribery.
Following Guzmán’s recapture, Coronel was allegedly involved in coordinating another escape attempt that was ultimately thwarted after Guzmán’s extradition. The evidence included a handwritten letter signed by Guzmán and statements from two anonymous cooperating witnesses who had collaborated with Guzmán.
Sources, speaking on condition of anonymity to Vice News, claimed that Coronel voluntarily surrendered and was interested in reaching a legal settlement. However, Jeffrey Lichtman, the attorney representing Guzmán and Coronel, denied these claims.
Both the Department of Justice and the FBI declined to comment on the matter. Mariel Colón, Coronel’s lawyer, denounced her conditions in Alexandria City Jail, asserting that she spent 22 hours per day in a small cell with nothing to do but read.
