At Umuoji inside Idemili North Local Goment Area of Anambra State, according to local media.

Son of the late doctor tell BBC that Dr Akunyili was on his way back to Enugu from one meeting to honour his wife inside Onitsha when the gunmen begin shoot his motor, kill him instantly with his driver and police orderly.

The proscribed Indigenous Pipo of Biafra (IPOB) has react.
IPOB on Wednesday denied killing the victim.
According to their statement release on Wednesday 29 September 2021.
“We have no issues with Chike Akunyili and we did not kill him, those behind this act must stop this and stop using IPOB’s name” they said.
