Megson, a club icon, has passed away, according to Sheffield Wednesday. Megson, who was born in Sale, has been with the Owls for 18 years and is generally regarded as one of the finest left-backs to have played for the club.

Who was Don Megson?
Don Megson was widely considered one of Sheffield Wednesday’s most devoted person. In 1952, he was signed from Mossley in the Cheshire League by Wednesday.
In November 1959, he made his first team debut. He later established himself as a dependable left-back and ultimately assumed the position of club captain.
Following Wednesday’s 3-2 loss to Everton in the 1966 FA Cup Final, he was the first losing captain to lead his side in a lap of honor.
Don played for Sheffield Wednesday for 442 games (including 386 league games and 6 goals) before transferring to Bristol Rovers in March 1970, where he played 31 league games and scored one goal.
He was the manager of Bristol Rovers from 1972 to 1977, winning the Watney Cup in only his third game in command.
From 1978 to 1980, he served as the head coach of the North American Soccer League’s Portland Timbers. He spent seven months as an assistant at AFC Bournemouth in 1983.
Gary and Neil, both of his sons, have played and managed competitively. Before his son Gary took over as manager of Bolton Wanderers on December 30, 2009, he served as a contract scout for the organization.
He published his autobiography, “Don Megson: A Life in Football,” in October 2014.
