In a cabinet reshuffle in December 2020, Tehan was appointed Minister for Trade. Following the Coalition’s defeat in the 2022 federal election, he assumed the immigration and citizenship portfolio in the shadow cabinet led by Peter Dutton.
Tehan’s political stance aligns with the Centrist faction of the Liberal Party, although he previously identified with the centre-right faction during the Morrison government.
