COVID-19: NYSC Donates Sanitizers To Journalists In Ondo

Mrs Grace Akpabio, Coordinator of the Nigeria Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ondo State, on Tuesday led some corps members to the Secretariat of Correspondents’ Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Akure, the state capital, to donate hand sanitizers to the journalists.

Mrs Akpabio explained that the NYSC decided to make the donation having realised that journalists are also frontline workers in the fight against COVID-19 and must be protected from contracting the virus in the course of discharging their duties.

She disclosed that the Director General of NYSC gave the directive that the Skills Acquisition & Entrepreneurship Department (SAED) of the scheme should, as a matter of urgency, produce hand sanitizers for frontline workers across their jurisdictions.

The NYSC state Coordinator appreciated journalists in the state for the good and cordial relationship she had been enjoying with them since she assumed office in the state in 2017.

She said: “I appreciate you so much, the journalists in the state have been friends to NYSC, I can remember during our annual management conference, the DG said he has never seen NYSC so covered.

“There is no programme we have that we invite the press that they don’t show up. Most times, I will be scared by the number of journalists at assignment but they always show us support.”

Commending the journalists for having a woman as the leader of their chapel, Mrs Akpabio said she’s an advocate of equal opportunity for women in power.

She noted that the fight for gender equality did not mean that women were planning to take over from men, calling for concerted efforts by men and women in the fight for more women in power.

Mrs Bola Ojuola, the Vice Chairman of the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel, appreciated the NYSC for the kind gesture.

She assured Mrs Akpabio of the unflinching support of the chapel for the scheme and sustenance of existing smooth relationship.
