Catherine Cortez Masto, née Catherine Marie Cortez, is an American politician who was elected to the U.S. Senate as a Democrat in 2016 and began serving Nevada in that body the following year.
She had previously served as the state’s attorney general (2007–15).
The county seat of Clark, Las Vegas, is where Cortez was born. Her father, Manny Cortez, was a supporter of Democratic Senator Harry Reid, and her grandfather was an immigrant from Chihuahua, Mexico.
Cortez Masto served as a federal prosecutor in Washington, D.C., from 1999 to 2001.

Paul Masto, a former United States Secret Service special agent, and his wife Cortez Masto reside in Las Vegas. Paul Masto is currently the owner of Universal Security Specialists, a private security company.
In addition to providing security for GreenMart and Silver Leaf Farms, two medical marijuana enterprises, he is a retired Secret Service agent.
She held the position of Attorney General of Nevada for two terms before making history in November 2016 by becoming the first woman from Nevada and the first Latina to ever be elected to the US Senate.
How long have Cortez Masto been married to husband?
They first met when Catherine Marie Cortez Masto and Paul Masto were tasked with organizing the logistics for President Bill Clinton’s visit to Las Vegas in the late 1990s, when Catherine Marie Cortez Masto served as Governor Miller’s chief of staff.
She finally consented to go on a date with Paul after several failed efforts, but only on the condition that she would drive herself so she could leave whenever she wanted.
“He asked me out on a date and he said, ‘Like a good attorney, I asked you out for dinner and you negotiated for lunch,’” she recalled.
Cortez Masto and Paul Masto have been married for 23 years now.
