Sadly, Ciaran succumbed to his injuries, while the driver of the other vehicle was reported to have sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment. Ciaran’s wife, Anmarie, a secondary school teacher, received medical attention for non-life-threatening injuries at Mayo University Hospital. Additionally, another male passenger from the second vehicle was also hospitalized.

This tragic accident happened just days before Ciaran’s son Ruairí’s 28th birthday. Ruairí started the match for Cork against Sligo Rovers but was substituted at halftime. He has previously played for Sligo Rovers, Galway United, and Torquay United in England.

Ciarán was involved in the licensed pub trade in Lecanvey, a charming seaside village located approximately six kilometers from Westport.

Following the incident, Garda Forensic Collision Investigators conducted a thorough examination of the crash scene and the involved vehicles. The road has since been reopened after their investigation.

Unfortunately, Ciaran’s death was one of three fatalities that occurred on the same weekend. A rally driver and his co-driver lost their lives during a crash on stage six of the Sligo Rally.
