He is the youngest of two sons of George Laettner and Bonnie Laettner. His father was a newspaper press paint printer while his mother was a teacher. He is an American with Polish descent. Laettner was selected 1st round, 3rd overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 1992 NBA draft. He went on to play for the Timberwolves for 4 seasons being traded to the Atlanta Hawks in 1996.
