Carabao Cup: Why Ozil Was Substituted In Liverpool Defeat – Emery

Arsenal coach Unai Emery has said Mesut Ozil was substituted in the 5-4 loss on penalties to Liverpool to avoid fatigue, Naijaparry reports.

Naijaparry understands that Arsenal and Liverpool tie had ended 5-5 in normal time in the Carabao Cup with Ozil making a return to the side after being frozen out by Emery.

The German was, however, in sparkling form for the Gunners on the night as he had a hand in two goals for the London side.

Ozil was substituted in the 65th minute of the showdown at the Anfield, prompting dissatisfaction from the fans.

While speaking at the post-match press conference, Emery, however, hailed the former Real Madrid star for his showing in the game.

According to him, “He (Ozil) played very well. He used his skills to help the team and was always positive.

“The substitution was decided before the match so he didn’t get tired.”

And when asked if the 2014 World Cup winner would play a part in the Premier League, he said: “Yes he could be.”

On the game, the Spaniard noted that “It was an amazing match, I enjoyed it. But when two teams concede five goals you can’t always be happy but playing a game like that could be good.”
