York was a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award, given to the best placekicker in college football, at the end of his sophomore season. He was perfect on extra points (36-for-36), nailed 85.7% of his field goal tries (18-for-21), and was a semi-finalist on field goals.

With 27 seconds left in the fourth quarter of LSU’s game against Florida on December 12, York made his career-long field goal of 57 yards to put the Tigers up 37-34 and secure the upset victory for LSU over the nation’s then-No. 6 squad.

At the conclusion of the season, York was selected for both the first-team All-SEC by the coaches and the second-team All-SEC by the Associated Press (AP). The Football Writers Association of America and the Associated Press both ranked him as a second-team All-American.
