Cousy’s father was a cab driver who served in the German Army during World War I. Just after the war, Cousy’s mother died of pneumonia. His father remarried Julie Corlet, then secretary and French from Dijon.

Cousy attended St. Pascal Elementary School, where he took up basketball at the age of 13. A year after, he went to Andrew Jackson High School in St. Albans. Surprisingly, Cousy’s attribute and playing skills were not immediately felt as he was even cut from the school team in his first year.

He later joined the St. Albans Lindens of the Press League, a basketball league which was sponsored by the Long Island Press. It was there he developed his basketball skills and gained much-needed experience but was again cut from his school’s basketball team during the tryouts.

Prior to attending college, Cousy had no intention of going. His performances in academics and on the basketball pitch made a way for him to have easy access into college. Cousy received an offer from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Cousy accepted the basketball scholarship after being impressed by the school. He spent the summer before matriculating working at Tamarack Lodge in the Catskill Mountains and played in a local basketball league along with a number of established college players.

Over his collegiate years, Cousy led the Crusaders to berths in the 1948 NCAA Tournament and 1950 NCAA Tournament, while winning NCAA All-American honors for three seasons.

During the 1950 NBA draft, Cousy was drafted in the 1st round, 3rd overall pick by the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. He refused to turn up and was picked up by the Boston Celtics. He starred with the Celtics for 13 seasons.
