Buju, who is considered a fast-rising afro-fusion musician, dropped the announcement via his official Twitter page some hours ago as he stated that his new name would be BNXN which is pronounced as ‘Benson,’ his real name.

There are indications that the change of name was as a result of Buju TYE being mistaken for another Jamaican singer known as Buju Banton.

BNXN, former known as Buju, will be the fourth Nigerian artistes that would change their name. Other Nigerian artists that have changed their name in the past include 2Baba, who was formerly known as 2Face, Kizz Daniel formerly known as Kiss Daniel, Cruel Santino formerly Santi.

Each of these artists have a reason behind their change, Kizz Daniel, for example, had to drop his former stage name Kizz Daniel because of the issues he had with his former record label G-Worldwide entertainment.

In the case of Buju TYE, the change of name to BNXN is likely because the singer is branding himself for the international market.

A quick search of the name Buju in Nigeria on Google will come up with Buju TYE; however, there are reasons this may not be so when searching for the name Buju when outside Nigeria, considering how Google algorithm works, especially in regards to the location of the searcher.

There is a likelihood that the name Buju Banton, a Jamaican singer, would instead pop up for the search Buju outside Nigeria.

A quick search about Buju Banton showed his real name is Mark Anthony Myrie, and he is a Jamaican reggae dancehall recording artist, who is rated as one of the most significant and well-regarded artists in Jamaican music.

Further search showed that Buju Banton has been singing professionally from 1987 to 2011, after which he took a break from the music industry only to return in 2018 and remains relevant to date.

The record revealed that Buju Banton was arrested on drug-related charges in the United States in 2009, and his first trial resulted in a hung jury.

Buju Banton was, however, convicted on the aforementioned criminal charge in 2011 and was imprisoned in the U.S. until December 2018, when he was released and deported to Jamaica.

Buju TYE now BNXN is a Nigerian star and has worked with the likes of Wizkid, The Cavemen, Timaya, Patoranking, Zlatan, Burna Boy, among others, with numerous hit songs to his name.
