In the first round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft, the Tampa Bay Rays picked Snell. He made his major league debut with the Rays’ Gulf Coast Rays, going 1-2 with an ERA of 3.08 across 11 games (eight starts).
He pitched for the Princeton Rays in 2012, compiling a record of 5-1 and a 2.09 ERA in 11 starts, and the Bowling Green Hot Rods in 2013, compiling a record of 4-9 and a 4.27 ERA in 23 starts.
The Charlotte Stone Crabs promoted Snell from Bowling Green in May of 2014. He faced the Daytona Cubs on August 2 and threw a no-hitter that was cut short by weather. In Stone Crabs’ history, it was the first no-hitter.
